Two kinds of channel: video and photo
Channels marked ● LIVE are live video from YouTube. You see cars, people, waves and ships as they move. They start without sound. Tap the speaker if you want to hear the port or the city.
Channels marked 📷 PHOTO are weather-station cameras. They take a photo every few minutes or every hour. They do not show movement, but they show the weather clearly. Most of them write temperature, wind and rain on the image.
- The time of the photo is written bottom right in the player.
- The ▶ button plays the photos of the last 24 hours, like a short timelapse.
- Full screen is the button bottom right on both kinds. On a phone, turn it sideways.
If a live stream stops, the channel does not go black. It automatically shows the photo of the nearest weather camera until the video comes back.
When they really help
Before the ferry. The Rafina or Aegina camera shows whether there are whitecaps on the sea. With white waves, small fast boats roll a lot. If you get seasick, take the conventional ferry.
Before a long day trip. Meteora and Delphi often have morning fog, especially in autumn. If the camera shows a grey wall at 8:00, keep the visit for later. It often clears by midday.
Before you hit the road. Attiki Odos at Chalandri and the national road at Agios Stefanos show whether traffic is moving towards the airport or the north.
When it rains in Athens. The Vyronas cameras write temperature, wind and rain on the image. If the rain has set in for the whole day, we have a ready rainy day plan.
A camera does not replace the port authority
A calm picture does not mean the ferry will sail. Sailing bans are issued by the Coast Guard, often because of the wind out at sea and not in the port. Always check with the ferry company or at the ticket office, especially in August when the meltemi blows. See also our guide to ferries from Piraeus.
Who runs these cameras
None of them is ours. The live videos are streamed by municipalities, hotels, shops and weather fans on their own YouTube channels, and they allow them to be shown on other sites. The photo cameras belong to weather stations and a school in Kaisariani. Windy.com brings them together and provides the player for free, on condition that the source is shown.
A camera can stop for days. The power goes off, the router fails, the hotel closes for the winter. We check all channels every time we update the site, and your browser checks the videos the moment they open.
Frequently asked questions
Is everything live video?
Channels marked «● LIVE» are. Those marked «📷 PHOTO» show a photo that refreshes every few minutes. For the weather, the photo is enough.
Do they cost anything or need an account?
No. They open right on the page, on computer and phone, without an account.
Is there a camera at Syntagma or the Acropolis?
There are cameras looking at the Parthenon and Syntagma, but the companies that own them do not allow them on other sites. The closest to the centre here are the live video with Lycabettus, the rooftops of Athens and Lycabettus from Vyronas.
Why does a camera show an old time?
The camera has not sent a new image. It usually comes back within a few hours. In the meantime, watch another channel in the same region.
Can I change channel without going back?
Yes. On every camera, the ◀ ▶ buttons under the screen go to the previous and the next channel. On a computer the arrow keys do the same.
