📍 The classic Peloponnese loop
The Mycenae-Epidaurus-Nafplio route is one of the most common full-day trips from Athens. The three stops are in Argolis and, by car or organized tour, can fit into the same plan. Mycenae connects the trip with the Late Bronze Age, Epidaurus with the Sanctuary of Asclepius and the ancient theatre, and Nafplio with the first years of the modern Greek state. It is not a relaxed outing. It needs an early departure and a little discipline with time.
🦁 Mycenae
Why Mycenae matters
Mycenae was one of the strongest centers of mainland Greece in the Late Bronze Age, roughly from 1600 to 1100 BC. The Mycenaean world included centers such as Tiryns, Pylos, Thebes, and Athens. In the Homeric tradition, Mycenae is connected with Agamemnon, and Homer calls it "rich in gold." The excavations of Heinrich Schliemann in 1876 brought to light golden burial masks, among them the well-known "Mask of Agamemnon," now in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
What you see at Mycenae
- Lion Gate (~1250 BC) — the main entrance to the citadel. Two carved lionesses, without their heads today, frame a column.
- Cyclopean walls — massive masonry blocks, so large the Greeks believed only the Cyclopes could have built them.
- Grave Circle A — burial circle inside the citadel where Schliemann excavated the gold masks.
- Treasury of Atreus — a monumental tholos tomb about 500 m from the citadel. The dome is 13.5 m in diameter and dates to around 1250 BC. It is often also called the "tomb of Agamemnon."
- Mycenae Archaeological Museum — finds from the site, together with copies of key objects; the most famous treasures are in Athens.
- Entry 12€ — for the archaeological site, museum, and tholos tomb, if the price has not changed. Allow 2-3 hours.
🏛️ Epidaurus
The acoustics that everyone tries
The Theatre of Epidaurus, from the 4th century BC, belongs to the Sanctuary of Asclepius, the god of medicine. It is one of the best-preserved ancient theatres and is famous for its acoustics. Visitors often climb high into the seats to hear a voice or a small sound from the orchestra. Modern studies have looked at the geometry of the seating and the way it helps the clarity of sound. In summer, the Athens Epidaurus Festival brings performances of ancient drama to the same place.
What you see at Epidaurus
- The theatre — capacity of about 14,000 seats. Climb to the top rows and test the acoustics respectfully around other visitors.
- Sanctuary of Asclepius — temple foundations, tholos (a circular building, partly restored), abaton (where patients slept for healing dreams), and bath complex.
- Stadium — the place for the athletic games of the Asclepieia, on a smaller scale than Olympia.
- Epidaurus Museum — sculptures, votive offerings, and objects connected with the cult of Asclepius.
- Entry 12€ — for the site and museum, if the price has not changed. Allow 2-3 hours.
🏰 Nafplio
- First capital of modern Greece (1828-1834). When Greece declared independence, Nafplio was the temporary capital under Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias before the move to Athens.
- Old Town — Venetian, Ottoman, and neoclassical architecture. Syntagma Square, narrow streets, balconies, and cafes.
- Bourtzi castle — a small fortress on the island in the harbor. The boat ride costs about 5€.
- Palamidi — a Venetian fortress of 1714 above the town. You go up by the 999 steps or by car. Entry 8€.
- Akronafplia — older fortifications and walls above the old town.
- Syntagma Square — the central square, full of cafes. Historic building of the first Greek parliament.
- Restaurants and cafes — many options for lunch, coffee, or ice cream before the return.
🚌 Getting there + organised tours
Organised day tour
The easiest option for most visitors. Usually 70-110€ per person, with transport, stops at the sites, and an English-speaking or multilingual guide. Allow 12-13 hours door to door.
Rental car
Gives the most flexibility. The drive Athens → Mycenae takes about 2 hours via Corinth. A practical plan is Mycenae → Nafplio → Epidaurus or Mycenae → Epidaurus → Nafplio, depending on where you want more time.
KTEL Argolidas
Athens → Nafplio direct, about 2.5 hours, 15-18€. After that you need local transport or a taxi for Mycenae and Epidaurus. All three by bus alone are difficult in one day.
Private driver/guide
More comfortable for groups or families. Allow about 300-600€ per day for car and driver, depending on the vehicle and duration.

📅 A realistic one-day plan
Athens → all three sites + back (12-13 h, by car)
- 07:30: Leave Athens. Drive E94 + E65 toward Corinth.
- 08:30: Optional 5-min Corinth Canal photo stop.
- 09:30: Arrive Mycenae. Citadel + Lion Gate + Treasury of Atreus + museum (~2.5 h).
- 12:30: Quick lunch in Mycenae village or drive to Náfplio for lunch.
- 13:30-15:30: Náfplio old town + lunch by harbour.
- 15:30: Drive to Epidaurus (~30 min from Náfplio).
- 16:00-18:00: Epidaurus theatre + sanctuary + museum.
- 18:30: Drive Athens. Arrive ~21:00.
Alternative order (afternoon Náfplio)
- Mycenae 09:30 → Epidaurus 12:30 → Nafplio 15:30-19:00 → Athens 21:30. This works if you want more time in Nafplio for a late-afternoon walk and dinner. It is more relaxed for the town, but leaves less time at the archaeological sites.
🍴 Where to eat
- Mycenae village tavernas — limited, basic. €15-€25 per person.
- Nafplio harbor restaurants — fish and Greek classics. €25-€45 per person. Sea view.
- Nafplio old town restaurants — many good options. €30-€60 per person at the higher end. For ice cream, Antica Gelateria di Roma is a known stop.
- Epidaurus area — limited; eat in Nafplio.
- Nafplio specialties — fish, wines of Argolis and Nemea, local feta, and olives.
🛡️ Practical tips
- Long day — 12-13 h door-to-door. Expect to be tired.
- Heat — Mycenae in July and August is very exposed. Morning or late afternoon is better.
- Walking shoes — uneven stone at all three sites; 999 Palamídi steps if attempting.
- Cash for entry tickets — cards usually accepted but cash backup useful.
- Audio guide or book — Mycenae especially needs context, because the site is not easy to understand on its own. A licensed guide helps a lot.
- Combined tickets — sometimes available for the full Argolis circuit. Check at first ticket office.
- Epidaurus Festival — if you are in Greece from June to August, check the programme at greekfestival.gr.
🎯 Why do this route
- A wide historical range in one day, from the Mycenaean period to the modern Greek state.
- Three different stops: prehistoric citadel, ancient theatre, and old town with castles.
- Nafplio gives the necessary breathing space between the archaeological sites.
- Familiar images of Greek history: Lion Gate, Treasury of Atreus, theatre of Epidaurus.
- An organized route from Athens, with a good road network and many operators.
🛏️ Worth overnight?
- Yes, if you have time — an overnight stay in Nafplio makes the trip more comfortable. You can keep Mycenae and Epidaurus without rushing.
- Two-night plan: first night in Nafplio, one full day for Nafplio and Epidaurus, return to Athens the next day.
- Nafplio hotels: about 80-300€ per night, depending on season, location, and category.
How to get there from Angel Athens (Ioulianou 50)
From Ioulianou 50, by car you head out toward the Athens-Corinth National Road and continue after the canal toward Mycenae. Allow about 2 hours to the first site. For an organized tour, say in the booking that you stay near Victoria Square and ask for the nearest pickup point. By KTEL, first go to Kifisou KTEL: from Victoria it is one stop to Larissis Station and then taxi or bus, or simply a direct taxi from Ioulianou. KTEL is useful mainly for Nafplio; to see all three places in the same day, a car or a tour is much more practical.
🎯 FAQ
Day trip or overnight?
The day trip works for first-time visitors who want to see the basics. An overnight stay in Nafplio makes the plan more human.
Family-friendly?
Yes, especially for children who can handle a long day. Mycenae has stone and slopes, Epidaurus has many steps, while Nafplio is the easiest part for a stop and food.
Best month?
April-June and September-October. In July and August, avoid Mycenae at midday because the site has little shade.
Can I do it without a guide?
Yes. A good guidebook or audio guide is enough for a basic visit. If archaeology interests you, a licensed guide is especially helpful at Mycenae.
Tour vs self-drive?
The organized tour is easier and comes with narration. With your own car you have flexibility and more control over your time in Nafplio.
Order: Mycenae or Epidaurus first?
Usually Mycenae first, because it is close to the main route from Athens. Then you can go to Nafplio for lunch and Epidaurus later, or keep Nafplio for the afternoon if you want a more relaxed walk.
