📍 Why choose Poros
Poros sits very close to the Peloponnesian coast; the strait that separates it from Galatas is about 200 m wide. The town spreads mainly across Sferia and connects with Kalavria, the larger and greener part of the island. The Clock Tower of 1927 stands above the harbor, the houses climb up narrow steps, and opposite lies the Lemon Forest of Galatas. Compared with heavier island day trips, Poros is easier to read in one day.
⛴️ Getting there
Hydrofoil from Piraeus
Flying Cat or Flying Dolphin, depending on the company and the season. The trip takes about 1 hour and 5-30 minutes. Allow 15-25€ each way.
Conventional ferry
A slower option, when there is a service that suits you. It can take about 2.5 hours, but it usually costs less than the fast boat.
From Galatas (Peloponnese)
Small passenger boats cross the strait continuously. The trip lasts a few minutes and usually costs 1-2€. It is useful if you combine Poros with driving in the Peloponnese.
Booking
Book through the ferry company sites or ferry ticket platforms. In summer, book early, especially for a Sunday return.
🏘️ Poros Town
- Clock Tower (1927) — the landmark at the top of the small hill above the harbor. The climb takes 5-10 minutes through steps and gives you a view over the strait, Galatas, and the Lemon Forest.
- Houses with tiled roofs — white walls, red tiles, and narrow streets falling toward the harbor.
- Harbor front — cafes, tavernas, and the everyday movement of the town.
- Archaeological Museum of Poros — a small museum with local finds. Entry 3€, if the price has not changed.
- Church of Agios Georgios — the main church.
🍋 Lemon Forest
The Lemon Forest of Galatas
Across from Poros, on the Galatas side, lies the Lemon Forest, a large area with lemon trees and other citrus fruit. Older descriptions speak of tens of thousands of trees; today the picture changes depending on the season and how the groves are maintained. Take the small boat to Galatas and continue on foot for 15-20 minutes. In spring, when the trees are in blossom, the walk has a strong scent and is most worth doing.
🏛️ Places of interest on Poros
- Temple of Poseidon — ruins of a 5th-century-BC temple at a high point of Kalavria. According to ancient tradition, Demosthenes died here in 322 BC. The visit needs a vehicle or enough time for walking.
- Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi (1733) — a small monastery in a pine-covered area, about 4 km from town.
- Russian Naval Base — ruins of 19th-century facilities, useful for anyone interested in the island's maritime history.

🛡️ Practical tips
- Walking shoes — uphill steps to the Clock Tower and optional walks.
- Cards and cash — you need both. The boat to Galatas usually wants small change.
- Sun and heat — open harbor, limited shade. Bring a hat, water, and sunscreen.
- Last hydrofoil back — typically 18:00-19:00 in summer. Verify same-day.
- Calmer pace — Poros usually feels less pressured than the better-known Saronic islands.
- Spring blossom — March and April are a good time for the Lemon Forest.
- Cars are allowed on Poros (unlike Hydra) — there are no special transport restrictions.
🎯 Poros vs alternatives
- Poros vs Hydra: Hydra is car-free and has a stricter island character; Poros is more relaxed, with easier movement and the Lemon Forest opposite. See the Hydra guide.
- Poros vs Aegina: Aegina has the Temple of Aphaia and pistachios; Poros has the Clock Tower, Galatas, and a smaller town for walking.
- Poros vs three-island cruise: the cruise gives a short time on each island; on your own you can stay 6+ hours in Poros. See the cruise guide.
- Poros vs Spetses: Spetses is larger and needs more time; Poros is easier for a one-day trip.
How to get there from Angel Athens (Ioulianou 50)

🎯 FAQ
Best month?
March-April for lemon blossom. May-June and September for swimming and more comfortable weather. July-August are hotter and busier.
Family-friendly?
Yes. Walking in town is relatively easy, Askeli has sand, and the crossing to Galatas gives a small change of scene during the day.
Day trip or overnight?
The day trip works well, because the town of Poros is small and the main stops are close together. An overnight stay gives you a quieter evening and morning, but it is not necessary.
Can I rent a scooter?
Yes, there are several rental shops. Allow about 15-25€ per day. It is useful for the Temple of Poseidon, Askeli, and the monastery.
Is the temple of Poseidon worth visiting?
Yes, if you have time and an interest in less-visited archaeological sites. For a first day trip, the harbor, the Clock Tower, and the Lemon Forest are usually more practical.
Combining with the Peloponnese?
Yes. If you have a car, you can cross from Galatas and continue toward Methana, Epidaurus, or Nafplio. As a pure day trip from Athens, keep the plan simpler.
