Sounion in one paragraph
Cape Sounion is the southernmost point of Attica, a rocky headland around 70 m above the Aegean and 65 km southeast of Athens. The Temple of Poseidon, built around 444 BCE, belongs to the major building program of classical Athens. The sanctuary mattered to sailors entering and leaving the Saronic Gulf. Of the original 34 Doric columns, 15 survive today. The visit does not need many hours, but it does need good timing.
How to get there
KTEL Attica bus
From Mavrommateon or Pedion Areos. Usually 7-8 euros each way and around 1 hour 45 minutes via the coastal road. It is the cheapest option, but you need to check the last return bus on ktelattikis.gr.
Rental car
Around 70 km via the coastal road. Allow roughly 1 hour 15-30 minutes of driving, depending on traffic. There is parking outside the archaeological site and you can add stops along the Riviera.
Organised sunset tour
Usually 45-75 euros per person. It often includes transport, sometimes hotel pickup, and commentary. Check whether the entry ticket to the site is included or paid separately.
Taxi or app ride
Usually around 80-120 euros each way. It can make sense for a group of three or four, but plan the return in advance. After sunset, available taxis in Sounion are limited.
The Temple of Poseidon
- ~444 BCE — built under Pericles' Athenian building programme. Replaced an earlier temple destroyed by the Persians in 480 BCE.
- Doric order, with marble from the nearby Agrileza area.
- 34 original columns on the rectangular plan; 15 surviving today.
- Lord Byron's name — carved on a column base, one of the better-known old inscriptions at the site.
- Smaller sanctuary of Athena nearby, with less visible remains.
- Mythology: this is the place linked with Aegeus, father of Theseus, who is said to have thrown himself into the sea when he saw the black sails.
- Entry: usually around 10 euros for a full ticket. Confirm before you go, because it changes seasonally.
Sunset timing
When to arrive for a good sunset
- Check the opening hours for that day: the schedule changes by season. For sunset, arrive 60-90 minutes earlier.
- Summer (June-August): sunset is usually around 20:30-20:45. Arrive around 19:00-19:15.
- Spring and autumn (April-May, September-October): sunset is usually around 19:00-20:00. Arrive around 17:30-18:30.
- Winter (November-March): sunset is usually around 17:00-17:45. Arrive around 15:30-16:30.
- A good time for photographs: from around 30 minutes before sunset until shortly after, when the columns stand clearly against the sky.
- Crowds: many organized tours arrive shortly before sunset. If you want a quieter visit, go earlier.
The coastal route: Athenian Riviera and Sounion
The road trip from Athens to Sounion is one of the stronger parts of the day. The coastal route follows the Saronic shore and passes Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Anavyssos, Lagonisi, Saronida, and Lavrio. If you have a car, you can stop for a swim or a coffee before continuing to the temple. See the guide to the Athenian Riviera.
Where to eat
- Tavernas by Sounion beach at the foot of the cape: convenient for a meal after the site. Around 25-35 euros per person.
- Lavrio, around 8 km north: an active port with fish tavernas and a less touristy feel. Around 25-40 euros per person.
- Anavyssos and Saronida on the return route: seaside tavernas in the mid-range.
- Vouliagmeni and Glyfada: more expensive choices along the Riviera.
- Snacks at the site: options are basic. Bring water and something small if you are arriving early.

Practical tips
- Walking shoes: the site has uneven marble and steps. Sandals can work in summer if they have good grip.
- Wind: Sounion is exposed and can feel windy and cool even on a summer evening. Bring a light jacket.
- Sun: there is very little shade. In summer, bring a hat, water, and sunscreen.
- Last KTEL bus: usually around 21:00-22:00 from Sounion, but always confirm on the day. If you miss it, a taxi back can cost more than 80 euros.
- Photography: a tripod is allowed, but drones are not. A wide lens works well for the temple and sea together.
- Entry ticket: do not assume it is covered by another Athens archaeological ticket. Check the official ticket office or hhticket.gr before you go.

Frequently asked questions
Sunset tour vs DIY?
A sunset tour is easier, especially for the return after dark. Going on your own by KTEL is cheaper, but you need to check the bus schedule carefully. Both approaches work.
Worth visiting in daytime not sunset?
Yes. The site is worth visiting during the day too, often with fewer people and a calmer visit. Sunset is simply the strongest moment for the landscape.
Is the Lord Byron graffiti visible?
Yes, on a column base. It often draws a small crowd, so you may need a little patience for a close photo.
Family-friendly?
Yes, because the visit is relatively short and the site is not very large. Still, watch younger children carefully near edges and low points without railings.
Wheelchair accessible?
Partly. The main access and terrace area are easier, but there is uneven marble and there are steps near the temple itself.
Best month?
May, June, September, and October are usually the most comfortable months. July and August are hotter and busier. In winter the site is quieter, but often cold and windy.
