O Kipos tis Gardenias: the Historic Park Canteen Inside Pedion tou Areos

📅 30 April 2026 ⏱️ 6 min read ❤️ Kathy
You don't need to leave the park to get a proper freddo espresso or an ice-cold tsipouro with meze. About ten minutes on foot from Ioulianou 50, deep inside Pedion tou Areos, under the plane trees, sits a small wooden canteen that has been here for decades: O Kipos tis Gardenias ("The Garden of Gardenia"). Re-opened in 2020 by a new young team, today it is one of the most loved hangouts in central Athens — simple, relaxed, fully green.

Why it's worth it — in one word: location

It's not a restaurant. It's not a bar. It's a tiny wooden kiosk inside the largest park in central Athens, with a handful of simple tables scattered under the plane trees. That's exactly the magic: it breaks the illusion that central Athens has no real green spot to just sit down. Settle in here on a Saturday afternoon with a freddo and a croissant — and for an hour you'll forget you're in a city of four million.

Gardenia functions as a public living room. In the morning the neighbours of Kypseli come down for coffee, at midday parents and kids drop in after the playground, joggers stop for fresh juice in the afternoon, and in the evening groups settle in with tsipouro and meze until closing at 22:30.

Where it is and how to get there from Ioulianou 50

Gardenia is inside Pedion tou Areos, on the northwest side of the park, near the corner of Evelpidon and Moustoxidi, just behind Plateia Protomagias (May Day Square). From the apartment the walk is essentially one long line eastward: take Ioulianou, cross Patision, continue on Ipirou, and enter the park at its southwest corner. Follow the main pathways inward and east — a few minutes later you'll see a small wooden kiosk between the trees. Total distance is roughly 1 km · 10–12 minutes on foot, flat all the way, and entirely inside the green.

What's on the menu

☕ Coffee & cold drinks

Freddo espresso, freddo cappuccino, hot variations, hot chocolate, tea, fresh juices and smoothies. Reliable, well-made, and always at canteen prices — Gardenia is the textbook example of "normal Athenian coffee": €2.50–3.50.

🥪 Snacks & light meals

Sandwiches, Arabic flatbreads, cheese pies, toasts, cheese and cured-meat platters for those who want something more. Soft-serve ice cream in the warm months — perfect for kids after the playground. Everything ready in minutes, no restaurant-style service.

🍷 Tsipouro, beer & cocktails

Gardenia's secret weapon. A small carafe of tsipouro with a meze platter (olives, feta, tomato, rusks) is the local crowd's go-to order. Ice-cold draft beer, wine and simple cocktails for sunset under the plane trees.

What to order

  • Freddo espresso — the most popular order. Strong shot, properly chilled, balanced — the no-brainer afternoon choice.
  • Tsipouro carafe with meze platter — the most "Athenian" thing on the menu. Chilled tsipouro, olives, feta, tomato, rusks. Ideal for sunset in the park.
  • Arabic flatbread — quick, served warm, fills you up without weighing you down.
  • Soft-serve ice cream — simple but perfect after a walk through the park, especially with kids.
  • Fresh orange juice — squeezed on the spot, no added sugar.

When to go

Morning to noon is the quiet window — best for a coffee and a book in the shade. Weekend afternoons (12:00–17:00) get busier with families and students — lively but still relaxed. Late afternoon (18:00–21:00) is the most beautiful slot: the sun sits low through the plane trees, groups gather for tsipouro, and the temperature inside the park drops noticeably. On hot Athens summer days, this single hour in Gardenia's shade may be the coolest of your day.

Combine it with a real walk through the park

Gardenia works beautifully as the stop on a proper walk through Pedion tou Areos: start at the main Mavrommateon entrance, walk up to the central plaza with the statue of Athena, cross the alley of busts of the heroes of 1821, descend to the rose garden, and finish at Gardenia for a coffee or a tsipouro. It's a self-contained 60–90 minute mini-programme — ideal for your first afternoon in Athens.

If you'd rather have a proper meal and full table service, on the same side of the park you'll find Green Park Athens — a renovated neoclassical building with a real kitchen. The two are not competitors: Gardenia is the quick, relaxed, outdoor option; Green Park is the "sit down and eat properly" option.

An honest recommendation

When we suggest Gardenia

It's our first suggestion when someone wants to sit in real greenery, with no programme: an hour of decompression after walking the city centre, a break during a run through the park, an afternoon stop with a book, or a casual evening with friends over tsipouro. It's not stylish. There's no table service. They don't take reservations. But it's authentic, inexpensive, and offers something you almost never find in central Athens: a quiet hour under real trees.
