First — find your gate
Piraeus has many gates, long walking distances and a lot of movement around ferry arrivals. Your ticket and the ferry company announcements usually show the gate, but the final berth can still change. Before you set off toward the metro or a taxi, check the signs, ask ferry staff or look for the latest port information.
Gates closer to the station
Some gates are a short walk from Piraeus Station. With light luggage, walking is often the quickest solution.
Middle-distance gates
If your gate is further inside the port, allow more time, especially if you are dragging suitcases.
Farther gates
For some ferry routes, the walk to the station can feel tiring. In those cases it is worth checking for a shuttle, a short taxi ride or a port bus.
Cruise or large-ferry arrivals
If you are arriving by cruise ship or on a large conventional ferry, the exit may be further from the station than it looks on a map.
Before you start walking
If you have more than one suitcase or you are arriving late, ask first how far the station really is. In the port, ten minutes on a map can feel like a lot more.
Option 1 — Metro (cheapest, easiest)
- Line 1 and Line 3 both serve Piraeus Station and can take you into central Athens without a taxi.
- Fare: this is a city journey, not an airport fare. Check the current prices before you buy.
- Time: the train ride itself is fairly short, but add the walk from your gate, the wait on the platform and any transfer at the other end.
- Operating hours: check the last train if your ferry arrives late at night.
- Best for: Solo travellers, budget travellers, anyone with manageable luggage. (See metro lines guide.)
Option 2 — Taxi
To central Athens
A taxi is practical if you have luggage, children or a late arrival. The final fare depends on traffic, the hour and your exact destination.
At night
Night tariffs are higher. Make sure the meter is running and ask for a receipt.
To the airport
Piraeus to the airport follows different pricing logic from a city-centre trip. See the flat-rate taxi guide and confirm the fare before you leave.
Luggage
Ask before you get in whether there is any charge for larger bags, and keep the receipt.
Use an official taxi rank or a taxi app. Avoid rushed offers from drivers approaching you during disembarkation unless the price and the meter are clear. (See taxi apps guide.)
Option 3 — Bus
- Bus 040 connects Piraeus with Syntagma and is useful when the metro is closed or does not suit your route.
- X80 is a seasonal or special service for cruise visitors when it operates. Check before relying on it. (See buses and trolleys guide.)
- X96 is the direct airport express from Piraeus. Check the stops and timetable on the day you travel.
A quick decision guide
Pick your option in 30 seconds
- Solo or couple, light luggage, daytime: metro.
- Three or four people with luggage: taxi, because the door-to-door ride may be worth the extra cost.
- Late night / metro closed: Taxi or bus 040.
- Going straight to the airport: X96, suburban rail if it suits your timing, or a taxi/transfer.
- Cruise visitor with only a few hours: organised transfer, taxi or an express visitor line if it is running that day.
Walking from the port to metro or tram
Most ferry passengers walk from the gate to the metro or tram station. Distances vary:
- From a closer gate: only a few minutes if you have light luggage.
- From a middle-distance gate: allow a decent walk and a few crossings.
- From a farther gate: consider a shuttle, a port bus or a taxi.
- Late at night: do not rely on a long walk unless you know exactly where you are going.
During busier periods there may be internal transport or shuttle guidance inside the port. Ask staff at your gate, because the route and frequency are not always the same.
Luggage and accessibility
The metro station itself is modern, but the tiring part is often the walk from the gate to the station. With heavy luggage, children or mobility concerns, a taxi or organised transfer can be far easier.
Common pitfalls
- Rushed taxi offers at the gate. Prefer the official rank, an app, or a clear meter agreement.
- "The metro is not running" claims. Check a live transport source or ask at the station before changing your plan.
- Unclear pricing for airport trips. Ask for a clear fare, meter or official flat rate where it applies.
- Pickpockets on crowded routes. Keep your bag in front of you and your phone or wallet close.
Key route: Piraeus → Syntagma
Metro Line 3 (blue)
Direct to Syntagma and other central stops. Often the cleanest option for the centre.
Metro Line 1 (green) + change
Useful if you are going to Monastiraki, Thiseio, Omonia or Victoria. For Syntagma you usually change or continue on foot from Monastiraki.
Taxi
Door-to-door, with time and cost that can change a lot with traffic.
Bus 040
Slower, but useful when the metro is not the best fit.
How to get to Angel Athens (Ioulianou 50)
From Piraeus Station, board Line 1 toward Kifisia and get off at Victoria. Ioulianou 50 is a short walk from there. It is one of the simpler metro journeys in Athens, as long as the walk from your ferry gate to the station feels manageable. With heavy luggage or a late arrival, a taxi may be easier.
🎯 FAQ
Where can I leave luggage in Piraeus?
Private luggage services operate around the port and near the station, but availability changes. Check before relying on them, especially on busy ferry days.
Can I get from Piraeus to airport directly?
Yes, by X96, taxi or a suburban rail and metro combination depending on the time. If you have a flight to catch, leave plenty of margin.
Is there an airport bus from the port?
Yes. X96 links Piraeus and the airport. Check the stop and frequency on the day you travel.
Are Greek ferry tickets refundable if the metro is on strike?
Usually not, because your ferry booking is separate from the metro. If getting to the port becomes difficult, contact the ferry company or agent directly.
What time does the last metro leave Piraeus?
The last service varies by line and day. If your ferry arrives after midnight, check the timetable before you travel and keep a taxi or bus as a backup.
