The dream and the plan
Greece has thousands of islands and islets, but the inhabited ones are far fewer. Island hopping does not happen across that whole map. It works mainly within groups: the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, the Saronic, the Ionian, the Sporades and the Northeast Aegean. The first mistake is linking islands that look close on the map but do not have a practical ferry. The second is counting only the sailing time and not the before and after: packing, check-out, transfer to the port, waiting, boarding, arrival and the new room.
Pick a group of islands
Cyclades
Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Ios, Milos, Sifnos, Folegandros, Tinos and Andros have the easiest network for hopping, especially in summer. They also have more people.
Dodecanese
Rhodes, Kos, Symi, Patmos, Leros, Kalymnos, Astypalea and Karpathos can make a rich route, but not always with daily links.
Saronic
Aegina, Hydra, Poros and Spetses are the simplest option for short trips from Athens.
Ionian
Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada, Ithaca and Paxos work differently and are linked more to western ports and airports than to Piraeus.
The 7-day rule
- Three islands is the upper limit for a 7-day trip that does not turn into a race.
- Two nights per island is the minimum for a real stay.
- In August, keep some margin for wind and ferry changes.
- If the day before an international flight is still on an island, the risk rises.
🎯 Sample 7-day Cyclades itineraries
Itinerary A: classic three (Santorini, Naxos, Mykonos)
- Day 1: Athens → Santorini (fast ferry 5 hrs or flight). Sunset Oia.
- Day 2: Santorini caldera, Akrotíri ruins, wine tasting.
- Day 3: Santorini → Naxos (ferry 1.5-2 hrs). Naxos Town arrival.
- Day 4: Naxos beaches + interior villages.
- Day 5: Naxos → Mykonos (ferry 30-45 min).
- Day 6: Mykonos beaches + Delos day-trip (~30 min boat).
- Day 7: Mykonos → Athens (ferry from Mykonos to Rafina, or flight).
🎯 Itinerary B: less-touristed (Milos, Sifnos, Serifos)
- Day 1: Athens → Milos (ferry 3-7 hrs depending on type).
- Day 2-3: Milos volcanic beaches (Sarakíniko, Kléftiko boat tour). (See our Milos guide.)
- Day 4: Milos → Sifnos (ferry 2 hrs).
- Day 5: Sifnos villages + Apollónia + food (Sifnos famous for Greek cuisine).
- Day 6: Sifnos → Serifos (1 hr) or → Athens via ferry.
- Day 7: Serifos beaches + Chóra. Return Athens.
Ferries and real connections
- The Athens-Santorini and Athens-Mykonos routes fill first. For July and August, book early.
- Inter-island routes are often easier, but not always daily.
- Do not check only whether a ferry exists: check the arrival time as well.
- From Ioulianou 50, Piraeus is the simplest departure point: a short walk to Victoria and about 30 minutes on Line 1.
- For Andros, Tinos and Mykonos, Rafina is worth checking too, especially if you are connecting with the airport.
📊 At a glance
200+
There are more than two hundred inhabited Greek islands.
3 islands
The upper limit for 7 days.
2 nights
The minimum per island for a normal visit.
August
The most pressured period for prices, crowds and wind.
When to do it
- Late May, June, mid-September and early October are usually the most balanced periods.
- The schedules are good then, prices are more reasonable and the heat is easier.
- July works, but it has more people and more expensive rooms.
- August, especially the first half, needs strong nerves: meltemi, full ferries, higher prices and less room for error.
- From November to April, island hopping becomes much harder because schedules thin out and many places shut down.
🎒 Packing for hopping
- Backpack > suitcase: cobblestones, hills, ferry stairs.
- Layers: hot days, cool ferry AC, occasional cool evenings on water.
- Reef shoes / aqua socks: many beaches pebbly + slippery.
- Reusable bottle: Cyclades tap water often desalinated + not great-tasting; refill at hotel filter or buy big bottles.
- Power bank: ferry charging unreliable.
- Cash: smaller islands have limited ATMs; some cash-only tavernas.
🏖️ Choose islands by personality
- Party + nightlife: Mykonos, Ios, parts of Paros (Naoussa).
- Romantic + iconic views: Santorini.
- Family-friendly + diverse: Naxos, Paros.
- Quiet + authentic: Folegandros, Sifnos, Serifos, Amorgos.
- Walking + wild: Andros, Tinos, Kythnos.
- Volcanic + dramatic: Milos, Santorini, Nisyros (Dodecanese).
- Off-the-beaten-path: Anafi, Kasos, Kimolos, Donousa.
The mistakes that spoil the trip
- Five islands in 7 days is the most common mistake.
- Tight connections between ferries are the second one.
- Connecting different island groups only because the names look good on the list is another trap.
- Do not organise it only because you like the islands; organise it because a real route exists.
- Do not leave the far island for the last day if an international flight follows the next morning.
- Returning to Athens one day earlier is often the more sensible choice.
If a ferry is cancelled
- First check the ferry company and the booking platform for a transfer to the next sailing or a refund.
- Then check whether another company is running on the same or the following day.
- Keep a small margin in the budget for an unexpected extra night.
- Travel insurance helps when delays create extra costs.
- The most important thing is not to tie every booking so tightly that one cancelled ferry breaks the whole trip.
💰 Budget
- The budget changes a lot by island, month and transport style.
- With simple rooms, slow ferries and tavernas, the cost stays lower.
- With smaller hotels, fast ferries and more comfortable dining, it rises noticeably.
- Mykonos and Santorini usually raise the total compared with quieter islands.
Frequently asked questions
How many islands can I visit in 10 days?
Three or four. Five only if you know exactly what you are doing and accept that more time will go into moving around.
Best month for hopping?
June and mid-September to early October. You usually get warm weather, less pressure and more human prices.
Can I just show up + buy ferry tickets?
Outside the peak season, often yes. In July and August, especially on popular lines, book earlier.
Cyclades or Dodecanese?
The Cyclades are easier for a first island-hopping trip. The Dodecanese need more planning, but they give a different character and less predictability.
What if I want one island only?
That is often the best choice. Naxos, Paros, Crete and Rhodes can fill many days without a second port.
Hopping with kids?
Yes, but with two islands at most in one week. Naxos and Paros are among the most practical combinations.
