Saronic islands from Athens: Aegina, Hydra, Poros and Spetses

📅 2 May 2026 ⏱️ 8 min read ❤️ Kathy
From 50 Ioulianou, getting to Piraeus is simple: a short walk to Victoria and then Line 1 straight to the port. That makes the Saronic islands the most direct island escape from Athens. Aegina, Hydra, Poros, Spetses and Agistri can all fit into a day trip, but they do not suit the same traveller.

Why the Saronic is practical

The Saronic islands sit between Attica and the Peloponnese. They do not need a flight, a full week off or a long Aegean crossing. Most sailings leave from Piraeus, and the exact gate is always shown on the ticket and the port boards.

Aegina is usually the easiest and cheapest choice. Hydra has the strongest harbour and no cars. Poros is calm and practical for families. Spetses feel more stately and sit farther out. Agistri is small, pine-covered and often paired with Aegina.

Aegina: pistachios and Aphaia

  • The easiest day trip: frequent sailings and a short crossing make Aegina the simplest option for a full day out.
  • Aegina Town: neoclassical houses, cafes along the port and a lot of weekend movement. It was also the first capital of the modern Greek state for a short period, before Athens took the role.
  • Temple of Aphaia: on the east side of the island, built around 500 BCE and still standing in good condition. Its pediment sculptures are now in Munich, and the so-called sacred triangle with the Parthenon and Sounion is better treated as a popular story than a core archaeological fact.
  • Pistachios: PDO Aegina pistachios are smaller and more aromatic than many imported ones, and they are sold everywhere in town.
  • For a fuller day: town, Aphaia and one beach are enough without turning the visit into a transport exercise.
  • Beaches: Marathonas, Agia Marina and Perdika are the most practical stops.

Hydra: without cars

A harbour with a different daily rhythm

On Hydra, motor traffic is heavily restricted to protect the character of the settlement. Around the harbour you do not hear scooters. People move mostly on foot, by sea taxi, with hand carts and, for heavier transport, with working animals. That is not folklore. It is part of daily life in steep stone lanes. The harbour itself is a stone amphitheatre of mansions built by ship-owning families of the 18th century. Leonard Cohen lived here from 1960 and bought a house on the island. Sophia Loren filmed Boy on a Dolphin here in 1957. The DESTE Foundation stages contemporary art exhibitions in the old slaughterhouse in summer.

  • Arrival: everything begins at the harbour and continues on foot.
  • Beaches: mostly rocky, including Mandraki, Vlychos, Avlaki and Plakes.
  • Sea taxis: often the easiest way to reach the swimming spots.
  • Walking: the route toward Profitis Ilias needs time, water and decent shoes, especially in heat.
  • Historical Archive Museum: shows the island's role in the 1821 War of Independence and helps explain the scale of the harbour mansions.

Poros: narrow strait, pines and easy sea

  • The setting: Poros is separated from Galatas on the Peloponnese by a very narrow channel, so the water can feel almost like a lake.
  • Poros Town: small, with the clock on the hill as its main reference point.
  • For families: one of the calmest options, with short distances, gentler water and beaches that do not require much effort.
  • Lemon Forest: across in Galatas, linked with lemon and orange groves.
  • Beaches: Askeli, Megalo Neorio and Russian Bay are the main stops.
  • Russian Bay: takes its name from the Russian presence in the area during the 19th century.

Spetses: mansions and Bouboulina

  • Distance: Spetses is the farther choice for a day trip, which is why it often makes more sense with an overnight stay.
  • Arrival at Dapia: in front of neoclassical buildings and older houses tied to shipping families.
  • Traffic: car movement is restricted, scooters are allowed and horse carriages still operate.
  • Old Port: keeps the memory of shipyards and maritime trades, not only cafes and restaurants.
  • Bouboulina: Laskarina Bouboulina lived and acted here, and her house museum is one of the island's basic visits.
  • School and literature: the Anargyrios and Korgialeneios School is linked with The Magus by John Fowles.
  • Swimming and October: Agia Marina, Agioi Anargyroi, Zogeria and Vrellos are the familiar beach names, while October brings the Spetses Mini-Marathon.

Agistri: small and pine-covered

  • Lower-key: smaller and quieter than Aegina, with pines coming close to the sea.
  • Main stops: Skala is the basic arrival point, while Halkiada needs a path and has a freer character.
  • Combining it: many people pair Agistri with Aegina in the same day, but that leaves limited time on each island.

Ferry times and what to expect

Aegina

The shortest and usually cheapest option, with both conventional and fast ferries.

Poros

A calm option for families, with small distances and easy sea.

Hydra

The strongest harbour for a first visit, but with fewer sandy beaches.

Spetses

Better with an overnight stay if you have the time, because the distance eats into the day.

Timetables and what to expect

  • Operators and times: change by season, so always check the ticket for the exact day.
  • Fast ferries: quicker and more expensive.
  • Conventional ferries to Aegina: slower, but usually cheaper.
  • Off-peak: the same day often works for tickets.
  • Summer and weekends: book in advance.
  • Organised one-day cruises: convenient for Aegina, Poros and Hydra together, but they leave little time on each island.

Day trips that actually make sense

  • Aegina: works best as a first day trip, with a morning departure, a walk in town, bus or taxi to Aphaia, food, pistachios and a late afternoon return.
  • Hydra: needs less scheduling, more walking and a slower pace around the harbour, the lanes, a museum or a short climb, then swimming by sea taxi if you want it.
  • Poros: the calmest family day trip of the group.
  • Spetses: possible in a day, but the distance consumes a noticeable part of the visit.

Which island suits a weekend

  • Hydra: usually wins on atmosphere and two nights without cars.
  • Spetses: better once you have time for the Old Port, the Bouboulina museum and beaches away from Dapia.
  • Aegina: easier on the budget and simpler for families.
  • Poros: relaxed, with short distances and calm sea.

Food by island

  • Aegina: pistachio turns up everywhere, from pesto to ice cream, and Perdika is the classic seafood stop.
  • Hydra: almond sweets and fish around the harbour, although prices rise quickly once you sit directly on the water.
  • Poros: simple tavernas without a particularly complex local cuisine.
  • Spetses: fish a la spetsiota, with tomato, garlic and herbs, is the local reference.

📅 When to go

  • April to June and September to October: the easiest months for the Saronic, with mild weather, swimmable sea and less pressure on the quays.
  • July and August: bring the weekend crowds from Athens. Hydra and Spetses usually become expensive first.
  • Winter: ferries still run, prices fall and the islands return to a more ordinary rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

Which island is best for a first trip?

Hydra is usually the strongest first impression. Aegina is the easiest and often the cheapest.

Can you do more than one island in one day?

Yes, but usually at the cost of time. Aegina with Agistri can work, and organised cruises cover more, but depth disappears quickly.

Which islands are easiest for families?

Poros and Aegina are usually the simplest. Hydra is harder with cobbles and steps.

What are the beaches like?

More modest than the Cyclades, but the sea is clean and the swimming is usually easy.

Which island works best for a weekend?

Hydra for atmosphere, Spetses if you want the longer stay to pay off, Aegina for convenience and Poros for calm.

Fast ferry or conventional boat?

Fast ferries save time. Conventional boats are mostly relevant for Aegina if you want the cheaper option.
